| 94/100 » IL CARBONAIONE 2006 • “The 2006 Il Carbonaione is a big, dark wine. Imposing at first, it flows from the glass with tons of super-ripe blueberries, grilled herbs, new leather, spices, minerals and flowers. Today the oak is rather prominent, but all the wine needs is time in bottle to come together. The finish is long, pure and refined. Simply put, the 2006 Il Carbonaione is a gem that readers won’t want to miss. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.” - Antonio Galloni |
| Proprietors Vittorio and Jurij Fiore craft one of Tuscany’s most unique wines from their vineyards high in the hills of Greve. Il Carbonaione is 100% old-vine Sangiovese made from the prized Lamole clone, a rare and prized mutation of Sangiovese found only in this part of Greve. The Fiores give Il Carbonaione roughly one year in 350 liter oak barrels (50% new), of which 90% is French and 10% American. Il Carbonaione is one of the most age-worthy wines in Tuscany, and has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle. It remains one of the best relative values in fine, ageworthy wine. My notes from a vertical going back to the first vintage, 1992, can be found on erobertparker.com. |

|
| 96/100 » IL CARBONAIONE 2006 • Amazing dark color for a Sangiovese. Mind-blowing aromas of crushed blackberries, violets and blueberries, with sandalwood undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and focused tannins and beautiful,
rich and subtle flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Best ever from this estate, which is owned by legendary winemaker Vittorio Fiore. Sangiovese. Best from 2011 through 2017.—J.S. |
| 96/100 » PIANTONAIA 2006 •Dark in color, with fabulous aromas of crushed blackberry, blueberry and black licorice. Deep and brooding. Full-bodied, with amazing flavors of intense fruit, toasty oak and fresh acidity. Goes on and on. Sangiovese. Not imported into the U.S. Best from 2010 through 2015. 50 cases made.” - James Suckling |

| 93/100 » PIANTONAIA 2005 • "Sattes, undurchdringliches Rubinviolett. Zeigt sich in der Nase sehr kompakt, Noten von Tinte, dann intensiv nach Holunderbeeren und Zwetschken. Bringt am Gaumen eine wahre Fruchtexplosion, sehr saftig und intensiv, breitet sich satt aus, feinkörniges Tannin, im Finale leicht rauchige Noten". |
| 90/100 » CARBONAIONE 2005 • "Sattes, undurchdringliches Rubin. Kompakte Nase mit Noten nach schwarzen Trüffeln, Holunderbeeren, unterlegt mit etwas Kakao. Am Gaumen betont salzige Noten, schöne Frucht, im hinteren Bereich ausgeprägt speckig-rauchige Noten". |

| 92/100 » Piantonaia 2005 • "A gorgeous Merlot. Aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, violet and licorice follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. There's plenty of vanilla and toasty oak character on the palate." JS |
| 91/100 » Il Carbonaione 2005 • "Shows very pretty sliced plum, with hints of toasty oak and flowers. Full-bodied, with a fruity aftertaste of vanilla and light chocolate. I love the perfumes in this wine. Sangiovese. Best after 2010." JS |

| 94/100 » IL CARBONAIONE 2004 • "Poggio Scalette’s 2004 Il Carbonaione (100% Sangiovese) is another animal entirely. It bursts from the glass with layers of deeply spiced, mentholated fruit. Sweet and expansive on the palate, this powerful, dense wine offers superb balance. Today the tannins are somewhat imposing, so further bottle age seems prudent. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |
| Father and son team Jurij and Vittorio Fiore make wines of much distinction at their small winery. The property is located in the hills of Greve, right next to neighbors Querciabella. Their top wine is Il Carbonaione, a 100% Sangiovese (from the Lamole clone) aged predominantly in small French oak barrels which has a track record of aging very well, even in smaller vintages. A forthcoming article in the Italy Report section of www.erobertparker.com will explore past vintages of Il Carbonaione in more detail." |

|
15.44/20 » Il Carbonaione 2004 • "Moderm, ripe aromas with lots of new oak. Ripe, full and very fresh fruit palate. Wonderful acidity, ripe tannins. Up to 3 years" (ND)......................................... Recommended |

|
| 92/100 » Il Carbonaione 2004 • "Thick, dark concentration sets the tone, but elegance and harmony are achieved thanks to delicate mineral and balsam notes that add buoyancy and personality. This is a wine that speaks volumes about its Tuscan territory and you can almost taste that sun-drenched, chalky minerality sucked up through the vines’ roots."-ML |

| 92/100 » Il Carbonaione 2004 • "Balanced and very beautiful, with plum, blackberry and grilled meat character. Full and pure, with silky tannins and a long finish. Caressing and refined, but needs a good amount of bottle age. Best after 2009. 2,500 cases made." JS |
| 91/100 » Piantonaia 2004 • "Fabulous aromas of flowers, blackberry, raspberry and toasted oak follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Merlot. Best after 2010. 170 cases made." JS |

“2003 and 2004 Central Tuscany–A Tale of Two Vintages” by A. Galloni
Issue #171/June 29, 2007 |
| 92/100 » Il Carbonaione 2003 • "Poggio Scalette occupies a beautiful spot in the hills of Greve. Proprietor Vittorio Fiore is one of Italy’s best known consulting oenologists so it can be no surprise that he and his son Jurij turn out gorgeous wines at their own estate. The 2003 Carbonaione (100% old-vine Sangiovese) is made in a big, powerful style that captures the essence of the vintage in its richness while maintaining superb overall balance. It offers generous dark fruit, earthiness, toasted oak and mineral notes with notable length and expansiveness on the palate. A lingering note of sweetness and finessed tannins round out the finish of this terrific wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021." AG |

| 92/100 » Il Carbonaione 2003 • "Enologist Vittorio Fiore has crafted a very distinctive wine with a vibrant ruby color, nice concentration and full-force aromas of blueberry, chocolate and smoked bacon. But what won me over was an elegant and precise point of white mineral or chalk that appears on the nose. It ages for 44 months and is succulent and chewy with firm tannins. Drink after 2008." ML |
